Chapter Fourteen

Breakfast had always been his favorite meal of the day, but when Levi opened the refrigerator, empty shelves greeted him. All he had was a little bit of milk, ketchup, hot sauce, and old leftovers from God knew when.

“Get off your ass and stop thinking about Isaac. He’s going to be gone, and you’ll never see him again.”

A dense fog of loneliness wrapped around him at that depressing thought. They might not be together, but the prospect of seeing him on the daily was something he looked forward to. It wasn’t only the sex. He’d enjoyed their talk by the lake and the banter between them. No matter how alone he felt, Isaac had a way of figuring out the right thing to say to him and making it better. He was the type who could fit in anywhere with anyone.

Seeing Isaac with his friends only solidified how wildly divergent their life paths were. Isaac was years older, settled in a career he loved, and unashamedly gay. He’d made it perfectly clear he wasn’t interested in anything but sex, and Levi had agreed, thinking it would be the same for him. But it wasn’t. The more time he spent with Isaac, the more he wanted.

Better to start pulling away, as Levi could see himself getting drawn deeper into Isaac’s vibrant, caring personality and falling in love with him.

“Fuck it. I’m tired of thinking about this shit. I’m hungry.”

With a huge sigh, he tossed the bag of leftovers into the trash and grabbed his car keys.

When he entered the Sip and Dip, his heart sank at the sight of Isaac and his two friends already seated and chatting easily with Nico. He stood by the door for a second, contemplating leaving, but then Isaac saw him and waved.

“Levi, get over here. We just sat down.”

Despite his earlier resolution, Levi joined them. “Hi. I don’t mean to intrude. I know you want to catch up.”

“Don’t be an idiot.” Isaac pointed at the empty seat next to him. “Now sit.”

“Whoa, hold up. I’m not an idiot, and don’t treat me like a kid and tell me to sit.”

“No, you’re not,” Gabriel cut off Isaac, who’d opened his mouth. “But Ronan and I would also like you to join us. The town is so charming, and we were hoping to take a drive. Maybe you could give us some sightseeing tips.”

“Okay, sure.” Giving Isaac a death glare, Levi slid into the seat next to him, immediately conscious of his heat and the pressure of his strong thigh against his. “I had nothing in my fridge, so I had to come for something to eat. It’s not like New York, where it sounds like you can just order and have it at your door in twenty minutes. Everything is at a distance.”

Ronan was concentrating fiercely on the menu. “The food here is delicious. We came for dinner last night, and I’m still thinking of that chicken pot pie. But now I can’t decide between the bacon and cheese omelet with home fries or the chicken and waffles.
